The most significant finds of "grape jelly" amethyst from Georgia in the USA need to be considered among the best in the world for their combination of fine geometry, sharp crystallization, and incredible color. The best of them generally, with a very few exceptions, came out in the early 2000s and were mined by Rodney Moore circa 2002-2005, from the era of the "grape juice" pockets hosted in a white quartz vein of unpredictable nature. Few pockets were found with large crystals of this size. This particular specimen went to the collection of John Whatley (direct from the mine), an Atlanta local (1939-2022) who built one of the largest and most important collections of Georgia and Southeast minerals. We purchased his entire collection, in which the amethysts were by far the most valued suite. After cleaning and lab work, we are happy to bring them to market, among the first old pieces of such quality to come back to the market in many years. The specimen is complete without repairs, and has only a tiny, very small restoration on one minor crystal tip. It is almost a pristine and complete floater, and is indeed complete all around except for a small contact only on the back of the least important crystal, where it grew against something else. Pristine on front display, with only very small amount of damage on another rear-facing crystal edge - trivial in context. This piece features the best color saturation, crystals so sharp that they look carved, and a stunning presence. Ex. Rodney Moore (mine owner) to John Whatley in the early 2000s.
