A single, colorless, textbook fluorite octahedron with a secondary growth of honey-amber-colored fluorite from the famous group of locations collectively called the Huanggang Mines, Inner Mongolia, China. This is from a unique and small find of the early 2000s that really surprised the mineral community, with thumbnail specimens of this "gem sphalerite" selling for thousands of dollars at first instance. The find consisted of a few loose crystals of these amber-colored fluorite, thought to be sphalerite gems, and very few were on matrix. This was early days for Huanggang and we had no idea yet, the diversity of fluorite that would later come out. The large, limpid fluorite measures 3.7 cm on edge and has glassy faces, with subtle surface texture details (in the photos, because of reflections, they look more frosted than in real life eye to eye). There is also a trio of gemmy, honey-amber-colored fluorite crystals that occurred as a later growth on the piece and these measure between 0.9 to 2.1 cm across. They are partially intergrown and add great contrast and aesthetics to the piece! It looks like an alien with two eyes! The piece comes with a custom engraved acrylic base. Early finds from around 2005-6 at the start of Huanggang production, that really confused us all at the time (they came out labelled as sphalerite on fluorite)! We found this treasure in an old collection in China, not long ago, where it has been all this time.
