This large, three-dimensional fluorite from the De'an Mine in China shows two very distinct generations of the species. The octahedral faces of the big, 5 cm, purple fluorite are markedly curved and it is perched on medium-intensity green, subhedral fluorite so that it presents very dramatically. The large colorful crystal is translucent to nearly transparent and is a light grape purple with good luster and sharp curved edges. It presents nicely centered near the top of the piece and contrasts well with the green fluorite it sits on and displays very well. When backlit it literally glows and shows off the It is a piece that jumps out at the viewer in a well-lit case! Note that if too strongly backlit, light goes right through the main green matrix mass of fluorite, and gives the crystal itself a greenish-purple color. These were nicknamed "Ox Eyes" when they came out from a now infamous and unique pocket back around 2009, that has never been duplicated, making them Chinese classics - that are also just unique fluorites from anywhere. This is a stunning "small" example from a find where most were larger plates without such separation of the purple fluorite upon the green. This pocket featured, uniquely, curved purple fluorite octahedral showing a gorgeous grape juice color at their best (as this is), on contrasting green fluorite. The best associations from this pocket, to me, are these few balanced examples of isolated and perfect curved fluorite (in this case to 5 cm or 2 inches) atop a crystallized ball of the deep green colored fluorite. No damage and strong color combined with aesthetics make this one of best in size class (and we know, because Rob bought half the pocket on the ground in China and saw them at the time).
