This small cabinet specimen from Egremont in the West Cumbrian Iron Mining District displays the classic glossy pyramidal and bipyramidal Quartz crystals on Hematite (iron ore) for which the region is famed, but with a twist. Normally, these Quartz crystals are Smoky in colour, whilst these are red - the variety Eisenkiesel. Added to this, tiny Calcite crystals are sparsely dotted over the surface of the Quartz crystals. Ex Malcolm Southwood Collection, no. MS 2011.161.
