Beryl var. Aquamarine
The gem pegmatites at Barra de Salinas near Coronel Murta in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais state, Brazil are better known for their colourful Elbaite tourmalines than Aquamarine, but this single, doubly-terminated 'floater' crystal of Beryl var. Aquamarine shows that the quality is there too. At 7.7 cm in length and with several completely transparent, almost water-clear areas, this is an extremely fine Aquamarine. It presents a great balanced hexagonal prismatic form with basal pinacoid terminations at either end. There is chipping around the ends, but also fascinating surface growth features on one side of the prism. Combined with its zonation in colour, with pale blue 'frosted' internal zones, it makes for a really fine Beryl crystal.
