Back in the late 1800s the West Cumbrian Iron Mining District set new standards in spectacular large display quality Baryte crystals and magnificent examples made their way into all of the great museum collections around the world. Mowbray mine near the town of Frizington was one of the most famous mines, particularly for really large amber to cream coloured bladed crystals. It operated between the 1880s and 1920s during which time many world class Baryte crystals were recovered by the miners. This particular specimen is exceptional for its sheer size, as very few of this prominence didn't make it into museums. It is in excellent condition and presents parallel, sword-like bladed Baryte crystals to over 15 cm in length with a small amount of typical Dolomite matrix. Additionally, the Baryte crystals display lovely colour zonation, with a deeper translucent to opaque orange core surrounded by cream coloured translucent to transparent tips, but with zoned banding near to their terminations too. A real treasure of a British Baryte. Ex Simone and Peter Huber Collection.
