Edingtonite
Edingtonite is something we normally see as smudges or small wads on a rock, not as a gorgeous gem quality crystal suitable for a competition level thumbnail collection! It is a very rare member of the zeolite group and is only found in about two dozen localities around the world. It is a rare barium-aluminum silicate hydrate and some of the best crystals are found in Sweden at the this particular manganese mine. This piece features a single, sharp, very lustrous, gem quality, prismatic crystal of colorless edingtonite. It is a nearly perfect, 1.9 cm orthorhombic crystal. An exceptional example of this rare zeolite that is only rarely seen for sale. We believe these came out prior to the 1950s, and this was in the Marilyn Dodge thumbnail collection by the 70s. She widely exhibited on the East Coast and was one of the early exhibitors of exclusively fine thumbnails. Her collection was purchased and kept intact for decades until we bought it whole, in around 2000. This was one of two crystals in the collection - and if I recall, the other was later cut for gem rough for rare species collectors. We sold this to the noted collection of Dr. Vasco Trancoso in Lisbon in the early 2000s, and got this back around 2020. It has been off market for another few decades, continuing its on again and off again journey. This will really surprise the judges in any TN case!
