An impressive example of allanite-(Ce) from Olden Township in Ontario, Canada. The big, brown to black, semi-lustrous, tabular prismatic crystal is a full three inches in length and is very well formed with sharp crystal faces. The brown color is largely due to surficial goethite which is common with these. It also has a small group of 1 to 1.5 cm, mostly complete sidecar grouping of crystals at the bottom for added interest and aesthetics...not too ugly at all, for a dark mineral species which seldom makes crystals this sharp. Allanite-(Ce) is a rare, calcium-cerium-aluminum-iron silicate (essentially a rare-earth silicate) that can form in a variety of igneous and metamorphic rock types. These were found for a brief time at this locality and never again. This is a large piece with excellent provenance from the Nowakowski collection, well known for significant Canadian material from this region.
