Dioptase on Calcite
Everyone knows about Tsumeb mine and its wonderful Dioptase specimens, but why are they so special? This miniature specimen from the famous Weyand collection goes a long way to showing the quality. It comprises a mottled pale blue, reddish-brown and white matrix which is coated with a layer of white crystallized Calcite. Upon this are hundreds of extremely gemmy emerald-green Dioptase crystals, all perfectly formed and averaging 2 to 3 mm in length. These crystals, despite being densely concentrated, are all individually exceptionally well formed and allow the contrasting white Calcite underneath to peak through. Additionally, the crystallized surface is not flat, but has upstanding 'ridges' meaning that the Dioptase crystals can be seen in multiple directions. A very pretty smaller Tsumeb Dioptase.
