Bornite, aka Peacock Ore, is a relatively common mineral species in copper deposits worldwide, but when it comes to free-standing crystals the tables are turned. Indeed, most of the best crystallized specimens of Bornite were extracted from copper mines in Cornwall centuries ago, showing how rare they really are. This thumbnail specimen from Malcolm Southwood's collection (no. MS 2014.175) is a cluster of two quite large (to 9 mm across) and well-formed individual Bornite crystals from the Redruth area in Cornwall. Many mines operated in the vicinity of Redruth - several of which are known to have produced excellent Bornite crystals. This richly crystallized specimen is accompanied by a Cowen collection label and a much earlier W. Maucher (1879-1930) label.
