This is an exceptional partial hematite pseudomorph after baryte miniature from Peters Mountain, Virginia! It is an elongate cluster of what were blocky, prismatic, diamond-shaped cross-sectioned barytes that were partially replaced and coated by metallic gray-silver, knobbly surfaced hematite. There are over a dozen former baryte crystals mounded one upon another that are actually perched on a pair of goethite columns where the two ends of the piece show the radial structure of the brown-green goethite internal to the hematite coating. The compromised areas at one end show the hematite to be more of a 1.5 to 2 mm coating. A striking partial pseudomorph and coating of hematite on and partially after baryte from the Eastern U.S. locality.
