An important for the locality display quality specimen from the most important suite of the Loud collection - Virginia. Large, classic and excellent Hydroxyapophyllite-(K) from the 1967 find at this famous Trap rock quarry that has produced the finest U.S. apophyllites. This attractive cabinet piece features one, large, almost cubic looking, very well-formed crystal with other smaller crystals on a prehnite matrix. The big, translucent apophyllite measures 4.7 cm on its longest edge and is whitish in color with a faint smoky hue on its top surface. It has good luster, although the smaller crystals on the piece, that range in size from 0.5 to 2 cm are more white, more translucent and have better luster. These smaller crystals are scattered attractively around the big one on the contrasting mint-green prehnite for great composition. Apophyllites from Fairfax are the best from anywhere in the U.S., and they are truly among the finest hydroxyapophyllite-(K) crystals known from anywhere in the world. See the 1972 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 3, No. 4. These are an American classic and Fairfax hydroxyapophyllite-(K) specimens are highly sought after. Bought from Brander Robinson on 11/6/99 who purchased it from Jon Ertman who collected it about 1985 (see collection card for a great story!).
