This is a spectacularly large matrix-less aggregate of hexagonal Hematite crystals in the form known as an 'Iron Rose'. Best known from the European Alps, this type of Hematite has also been known from Brazil for several centuries but are less talked about. Perhaps that is because the European ones are more often sat on matrix and present differently aesthetically but, either way, there is no escaping the sheer size and overall quality of this crystallized Hematite from Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais state. I am particularly taken by the subtle concave surfaces produced by the delicate layers of scaly Hematite crystals stacked one on top of each other.
