NATIVE Iron
Most natural Native Iron is found in meteorites and is identifiable due to the characteristically elevated levels of nickel and other iron-nickel compounds associated with extraterrestrial bodies. True Earth-related Native Iron is sometimes given the name Telluric Iron after "Tellus" meaning "Earth" and is extremely rare. One of the first discoveries was made during the 1890s at Uivfaq, Disko Island, Greenland but was erroneously presumed to be from a meteorite. It was only later that it was realized that this was in fact a natural terrestrial deposit and others have subsequently been found along western Greenland. This cabinet-sized piece from the occurrence at Uivfaq is certainly not one to put on display, but is a fascinating specimen from the standpoint of rare species and rare localities associated with historic discoveries. It comes from David Hardman's collection whose collecting started in the 1960s.
