BARYTE with Marcasite
This Baryte specimen is extremely distinctive and yet I can't recall having ever seen another quite like it. Its pseudocubic crystal form with lopped corners and intense colour zoning from burgundy-brown to colourless is most peculiar. The Baryte crystals are not without some damage, but many are extremely fine, especially when they are so glassy and bright with their outright weird crystallographic form. It is undoubtedly a very old specimen and is documented as from the Příbram District, Central Bohemian Region, Czech Republic on its original Staatl Minerlien Niederlage Freiberg label. This was a dealership established in-house at the mining academy in Freiberg during the 18th century, to provide students with specimens for study. This handwritten label is clearly not that early in age, but is perhaps late 19th century in origin. The lovely Baryte crystals sit upon a layer of Marcasite.
