Magnetite
I am not sure how many mineral localities there are in New York, but just seeing this locality on a map and its proximity to the Big Apple I find fascinating. Laurel Hill is now a country park but over various periods during the 20th century quarrying and road widening exposed sections of a pipe-like intrusion from which some interesting mineral specimens were obtained. This small cabinet-sized crystallized Magnetite specimen comes from David Hardman's collection in the UK, but he had a particular interest in north-eastern American minerals and collected from the 1960s onwards. It features several very glossy black octahedral Magnetite crystals individually sat upon rock (possibly diabase) matrix. These crystals reach over 1.5 cm across and although they display fine surface cracking they look very glossy and bright and stand up nicely from their background. A few of the crystals have chipping to their tips, but it still presents very well and is certainly an unusual piece from a locality where new finds are unlikely.
