Tucson, Arizona, USAThis small miniature specimen is a very nice representative sample of the contrasting Native Silver and Native Copper found at the historic Minesota mine, Rockland, Ontonagon County, Michigan, USA. This mine was commenced in 1847 and closed in 1885, later being merged with Michigan Mining Companies other operations in the area. During its early life the mine was extremely rich, with some enormous masses of Native Copper recovered. Unusually for Michigan, there appears to be more Native Silver present than Native Copper in this specimen. Both metals present as slightly hackly masses. A small area of smooth white Calcite can also be seen which is the remnants of what was dissolved with acid to expose the native metals. This is common practice for specimens from this area. Ex David Hardman collection.
