Many centuries ago, these rhodochrosites were some of the best of species and now have been surpassed — but are still very good especially for a European one and are now exceedingly rare, especially in this size and quality. This is a particularly fine example in that it is very pretty, featuring an elongate and protected "pocket" or vug with numerous, red-orange, translucent, rounded rhodochrosite growths (botryoids) on a goethite-manganite matrix. The botryoids have a satin luster and vary in size from 0.5 to 1.5 cm across and are distinctly translucent which gives them a rich pinkish glow. There are even a few, small 1 to 2 mm sharp rhodochrosite crystals scattered on and about the botryoidal rhodochrosite. This piece has far better color than you normally see on such German rhodochrosite specimens and the color contrasts well with the surrounding iron and manganese oxides.oxyhydroxides. There is some contacting around the periphery of the vug as expected for breaking into this remarkable vug to see what was inside! This piece is probably over 125 years old!
