This magnificent large cabinet-sized Azurite specimen is an extremely rare large survivor from the famous Holbrook mine, an early to mid-20th century underground operation accessed by a shaft and later incorporated within the Copper Queen mine at Bisbee, Arizona. Even small specimens are uncommon from this working. This stunning display piece is like a cave, with a large crystal-lined cavity coated with deep blue glossy Azurite crystals. A few pieces of brecciated matrix are incorporated but most of the specimen is Azurite as banded colloform layers. Some of the layers are pale blue which provides an attractive contrast with the darker Azurite. It should be remembered that Holbrook mine was the source of most Chalcoalumite specimens which often occurred in layers upon and within Azurite. This has not however been analyzed, and could simply be very pale coloured Azurite. Some thin layers of green Malachite are also present, and further sparkling Azurite-lined cavities are to be seen around the sides of this specimen. A very large and impressive, museum quality Azurite from this important individual mine.
