Tucson, Arizona, USAWhen it comes to Bisbee specimens, those from Sacramento Pit are some of the rarest, simply because of when the mine was operational. A smaller openpit, the Sacramento Pit opened in 1917 but by 1950 it had been consumed by the larger Lavender Pit. The most famous specimens from Sacramento Pit are Malachite pseudomorphs after large bladed Azurite crystals and it should be remembered that when these were found they were new to science, well before the finds at Tsumeb mine. This superb miniature specimen exhibits excellent large Malachite pseudomorphs after Azurite crystals reaching 4 cm in length but also displays a few unaltered Azurite crystals and crystals where the transition is partial too. Sat upon a small piece of gossanous matrix, the Malachite/Azurite crystals display several forms - from larger composite crystals with stepped, serrated terminations, to smaller perfect monoclinic crystals. A fine, old-time, Arizona classic.
