Haüyne in Basalt pocket
Named in honor the famed 19th Century crystallographer and mineralogist, Abbé René Just Haüy, this mineral has always been rare and gemmy (if small) crystals from Germany have set the standard. Some are even cut into (tiny) gemstones for collectors! This matrix specimen hosts several glassy and gemmy, vibrant blue crystals to a huge size for this find, 1 cm or so, all safely nestled in a vug. They are lovely crystals partially  filling a pocket, and they glow with an utterly intense blue saturated hue.  The largest of these flat laying crystals (it is hard to say they are a crystal, as much as an aggregate of small crystals and growths) measures 1 cm across - and all of them display a distinct vitreous and beautiful luster. It is simply gorgeous and this is one of the richer examples we have seen, especially as the color  is balanced to a focal point in a nice sized matrix. Hauyne is a rare sodium-calcium-aluminum silicate-sulfate occurring in quartz-poor volcanic rocks, such as this basalt nodule. This is a beautiful piece from one of the best classic locales for the species. Although historic, and known from old museum collections, we were told this is from a relatively modern find (early 2000s) and we purchased it from a dealer at the Munich Show in past years.  Much of what was collected seems to have been sold as gem rough.
