Hambergite is a rare accessory mineral in gem pegmatites and is uncommon from the Tourmaline pegmatites in Madagascar. Large crystals are uncommon from any locality, in fact. This is a large, significant crystal for Madagascar, or anywhere, that measures over four inches in length and three inches across! It is a translucent, ghostly-white, and very lustrous. It has detail accents from vertical striations on the two prominent, prismatic crystal faces. There is a complex twin system here, but it is difficult to describe (although noted clearly that the crystal shape is unusual!). The remainder of the crystal is dominated by multiple, complex crystal faces around the periphery that include sloping pyramidal crystal faces; and the termination is dominated by a flat pinacoid. Some areas of the crystal are nearly transparent and gemmy in small areas. There are even a couple of small Quartz crystals growing out of the sides, one incomplete and one transparent and perfectly terminated; both are about 1 cm in length. Hambergite is a rare beryllium borate and this is a fine specimen from a very important locality for the species. This is a hugely important example worthy of standing next to significant gem pegmatite crystals, and was purchased from the collection of madagascar expert Dr. Federico Pezzotta by the previous owner, when it was found (2009, and his cost was 9000 euros at the time).
