Aphthitalite
This is a large and spectacular Aphthitalite crystal from U.S. Potash Company Mine in New Mexico which has arguably produced the best-of-species for the mineral! It is a sharp, very geometric, transparent and colorless trigonal crystal that measures nearly three inches across and an inch thick! Big by any standard for the species! It is a potassium-sodium sulfate and yes, keep it away from water. This stunning crystal is complete as it was pulled out, loose from a cavity in this large potash (potassium salts) deposit in New Mexico. This piece represents part of the spectacular find from mid-2011 at this locality where the best crystals ever found were recovered; and this incredible crystal is part of that discovery! The section of this mine is inaccessible due to settling, as well as long closed off (and in fact, any further collecting here is forbidden). These best of species crystals will never come again. The piece came out of a private and significant rarities collection (anonymous for now, but will be given to buyer), and the owner purchased it from the geologist who made the discovery, at that time.
