Pyrite with Pyrite pseudomorph after Baculites Yokoyamai (Fossil)

Standing upright at a staggering 16.9 centimeters and leaning against its original black shale matrix is an exceptional specimen of a well-preserved Baculites fossil that has completely been "pyritized," or replaced by Pyrite. The entire length of the stalk is detailed with excellent ribbing and accompanied by three spheroidal clusters of cubic and octahedral Pyrite crystals, the largest of which is perched at the top of the fossil and reaches 3.6 centimeters in diameter. From an aesthetics standpoint, the Pyrite gives the fossil a resplendent metallic luster while the brassy-golden color makes the Baculite stand out perfectly against the hosting shale matrix. Due to the process required to remove the surrounding matrix, these specimens will often have repairs or stabilization. Please note, there is a minor typo on the custom acrylic base for the species name, which is actually Baculites Yokoyamai.
