BARYTE
This is a magnificent large display Baryte from the famous West Cumbrian Iron Mining District. Reaching an impressive 19.5 x 18.5 x 10 cm this rather sculptural piece does have some damage, but this is outweighed by its superb aesthetics, dramatic appearance and historic rarity. Rather than one or two very large crystals, this is composed of a myriad of hundreds of interlocking 1 to 2 cm sized, pale blue and white, colour-zoned platy and tabular crystals with a fine resinous lustre. These crystals fill large open voids between thin angular 'shards', or 'leaves' of Dolomite. Apart from the colour-zoning, the other distinctive feature of the Baryte crystals is their angular shape, with prominent flat, blocky edges. A very fine British Baryte.
