Chalcopyrite with Sphalerite on BARYTE and Dolomite
Earl Ferrers' mine is a fascinating site on the border between Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Specimens from this historic lead mine are very distinctive and are seen in many early English collections, notably that of Philip Rashleigh (1729-1811) in Cornwall, but they are rarely available for sale. Attempts to access the mine during the 1970s met with failure, but persistence by Dr Frank Ince, whose specialism is Leicestershire mineralogy, obviously paid off. This lovely miniature specimen, which was collected by Dr Ince and given to Malcolm Southwood, no. MS 2015.123, presents the classic dark pink Baryte matrix with pale pink finely crystallized cockscomb Baryte terminations, upon which small (1 to 2 mm) black Sphalerite crystals and glossy brassy Chalcopyrite crystals are scattered. A really fine Earl Ferrers specimen, showing all that one would expect from the old-time material.
