This large beautiful sparkling plate of Hematite var. Specularite is a true West Cumbrian classic with the association of sparse scattered cream rhombic Dolomite crystals and colourless bipyramidal Quartz crystals elevating its aesthetics significantly. Despite being a very thin specimen the strength of the underlying layer of massive Hematite is remarkable and makes it even more spectacular. As is common with Specularite, whose crystals are wafer-thin and razor-sharp, some small areas of crystals are abraded, but these require close inspection. The nicely spaced 'islands' of Dolomite and Quartz crystals really do accentuate this piece and are themselves in pristine condition. A very pretty West Cumbrian iron mines piece, from one of the most famous mines - Florence. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2010.141, it also comes with an older typed label, possibly from the 1970s or 1980s.
