The pseudomorphs of Hematite after Magnetite out of this national park area in Argentina are very architectural and aesthetic like this one! This is really a stunning, sharp and aesthetic cluster of a dozen octahedral crystals ranging in size from 1 to 4.3 cm from tip to tip of the crystals. The crystals have a bright metallic gray, yet sparkly luster from the sprinkling of all the tiny Hematite crystals on their broad, triangular faces. This well composed piece represents earlier formed, perfectly octahedral Magnetite crystals that have been completely replaced by Hematite! In the literature and especially in the iron ore industry these pseudomorphs are referred to as "Martite". Both Hematite and Magnetite make good iron ore with Hematite containing 70% iron and Magnetite 72% iron. This piece is likely from the second or third wave of production in the Payún Matrú Volcano area in the early 2000s or early 2007 that produced much better and more lustrous crystals compared the original find from the late 1990s. You can tell because of the style and surface sparkle, which many later examples simply lacked. This is exquisite for the size range and quality.
