This is a large, pseudo-hexagonal cluster of purple Amethyst crystals from Uruguay that is in ultimate disguise! This cabinet piece is somewhat deceiving as the Amethyst has an overall hexagonal shape that measures 6.5 cm across and 5 cm tall and consists of a myriad of less than 1 cm, medium purple crystals with good luster. This hexagonal arrangement sits on an elongate plate of matrix also covered in similar Amethyst crystals. Of course, this is not the proper shape for an amethyst crystal! What is not immediately revealed is that the Quartz (Amethyst) has completely replaced and subsequently overgrown an earlier formed, large, hexagonal Calcite crystal — and the only evidence left is the form of what was the Calcite! A very interesting and showy pseudomorph from Uruguay with a really pleasing overall form and balance. Part of an educational set, with these additional items: Quartz var. Amethyst (SYP25-18a) and Calcite (SYP25-18c).
