This miniature specimen is a great example of the type of Corundum var. Ruby crystals mined at the Jegdalek Ruby Deposit in Kabol Province, Afghanistan. During the 1990s and early years of the 2000s many Ruby mines operated the Jegdalek Ruby Deposit, but specimens have been rarely seen since about 2010. This lovely piece, that likely dates back over 20 years or more, features an elongated pink Ruby crystal (1.4 cm in length) embedded within white Calcite 'marble'. It has been carefully prepared to make the crystal stand up from the surrounding Calcite. Rubies from the Jegdalek Ruby Deposit famously transmit light much better than those seen in specimen form from other worldwide occurrences and that can been seen here when the crystal is backlit. Add longwave UV into the mix and the crystal explodes into colour, with the most intense vivid red-pink imaginable. Tiny inclusions of silvery Graphite and golden Pyrite are present within the white 'marble'.
