Milarite
Giuv Valley, or Val Giuv, is one of the top Milarite localities in Europe and the Type Locality where it was first found in 1870. Located in the high Swiss alps, most of the collecting localities are near to the head of the valley with peaks reaching 3,000 m in altitude. Bizarrely, the name Milarite comes from Val Mila, a neighbouring valley which has been proven to have been erroneously claimed as the original source. As a beryllium-bearing mineral, Milarite is only found in and around the aplite dykes at Val Giuv. This large miniature matrix specimen hosts several glassy prismatic Milarite crystals. Individually, they reach 6 mm in length, with three crystals clustered together on one side of the specimen and another embedded within Chlorite on the back of the specimen. The crystals all lie flat, rather than freestanding, but this is a good-sized matrix specimen of this rare species. It is from the superb systematic collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
