Tucson, Arizona, USAThis long, elongated, complex aggregate of twinned Orthoclase feldspar crystals is a classic from the St Gotthard area like those written about in mineralogical texts from the earliest years of the 19th century. However, what is most fascinating is the accompaniment of beautiful old handwritten labels. These reveal a more precise locality of "Monte Stella" which was mentioned in Robert Jameson's early mineralogical book but about which all record appears lost. Indeed, in recent years, collectors have talked online of this mysterious place near St. Gotthard, but without really being able to pin it down properly. Judging by the style of these old labels they date to at least the middle of the 19th century, making this a wonderful historic piece. At 11 cm in length, and in fine, original condition, it is a wonderful example of historic European mineralogy. It is from the superb systematic collection assembled by brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021).
