Crystal ClassicsFeatured
Tucson, Arizona, USAAn African classic: large, cola-coloured, spear-shaped Descloizite crystals aggregated in a solid sculptural mass. Berg Aukas, in Grootfontein District, Namibia is far and away the world's premier source of Descloizite crystals, most of which came from the mine during its working life pre-1978. Specimens can reach significant sizes, but the very best examples are not always the largest, but those that display complex, curious, crystal forms. Here, on this piece, rather than the more typical rounded bladed crystals, the crystals are sharply pointed. This miniature specimen actually features some very large bladed crystals: the longest 'spears' reaching 2.4 cm in length. As is typical of this species, some of the crystals are broken, but on this piece the evidence is certainly not at all obvious, either because they are snapped at their base, and so tucked away, but also because the surface lustre on fracture surfaces often blends in with the natural glossy resinous crystal edges. The main visible crystals are all immaculate. For this reason, it presents exceptionally well as a beautifully crystallized Descloizite, not forgetting how rare this lead zinc vanadate hydroxide is on a world scale.
