Tucson, Arizona, USABournonite is one of the all-time classics of Cornish mineralogy. Crystals from the Type Locality at Huel Boys are almost never seen other than in very old collections (late 18th century), and are smaller and more discrete than those found at Herodsfoot mine during the 1860s. As a consequence, it is those from Herodsfoot mine, like this one, that garner the most attention. This miniature specimen from Herodsfoot mine consists of a dense aggregate of chunky bladed 'cogwheel' Bournonite crystals which are partially hidden by an overgrowth of small pyramidal Quartz crystals - a classic feature of Herodsfoot mine Bournonites. The most complete Bournonite crystal reaches 2.5 cm across and 1 cm thick and displays a wonderful gunmetal grey surface (edge) on its 'cogwheel' with a thin film of finely crystalline Pyrite coating the side of the crystal. Another similar sized crystal, is almost totally obscured by Quartz overgrowth. The base, or side of the specimen depending on how it is displayed, is solid Bournonite, providing the specimen with a dense feel. There is a repair to the specimen, where a thin layer of Quartz crystals has been reattached, but it is not obvious. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 1998.002. This is clearly an older specimen of which virtually all were collected underground when the mine was active during the 1860s and 1870s.
