Quartz on Hematite$450.00

A West Cumbrian classic from the once rich iron mines. Provenanced no more precisely than "Frizington" the old painted number "M.195" written on the back suggests perhaps that it once resided in an old institutional collection. Either way, this lovely miniature specimen is clearly from the mines in the vicinity of Frizington. A hard siliceous Hematite-Quartz base is encrusted in a layer to glossy black bladed Specular Hematite very little of which is exposed due to the superb large (to 1.8 cm) bipyramidal Smoky Quartz crystals sat on top. These crystals are extremely glassy and display very nicely but the two most prominent crystals do both have slightly chipped terminations. Internally, these crystals are more smoky towards their tips and more milky within. With support it sits nicely in an upright position. Ex Malcolm Southwood collection, no. MS 2000.059.
