Tucson, Arizona, USAThe N'Chwaning mines in the Kalahari Manganese Field, North Cape Province, South Africa are some of the most famous for spectacular crystallized Rhodochrosite specimens which are known to occur in many different forms, both shape and colour. This thumbnail specimen comprises two soft pink, slightly translucent curvilinear to bladed Rhodochrosite crystals, each 1.4 cm in length, growing up from a core of black manganese oxides - most likely Manganite. These crystals have surfaces like dragon scales, where the crystal is made up of layers of smaller platy crystals. A third much smaller crystal is attached to one side. The crystal habit displayed here is very different to what is usually seen at the N'Chwaning mines, so although small, this a really unusual piece. Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines is now getting so difficult to obtain making specimens extremely collectible.
