Elbaite
This small cabinet specimen is one of the most peculiar Elbaite tourmalines I have seen from Coronel Murta in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. I certainly cannot call it gemmy, but its crystallization is bizarre and remarkably well-formed. The whole specimen is tourmaline, a complex aggregate of parallel intergrown crystals. The aggregate is dominated by one wide (3.6 cm) fully terminated pyramidal crystal with glossy upper surfaces and short striated prism sides as it sinks into the surrounding mass of smaller terminated crystals. All of the Elbaite crystals are terminated with a deep grey-green colour which transitions downwards after about 1.5 to 2 cm into white, or in one area a pale raspberry pink colour and then white. The base of this crystallized 'bed' of Elbaite is smooth and appears to be a natural flat termination rather than a fracture plane. Despite not being the most colourful and bright Elbaite, this specimen has a special character about it and is fine example of crystal form for tourmaline.
