Tucson, Arizona, USAThis pretty thumbnail Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines in the Kalahari Manganese Field, North Cape Province, South Africa displays a quite intriguing form - like dragon's skin - and an insanely vibrant pink tone. In a slightly domed form, the small crystals give the appearance of being pseudohexagonal prisms, reaching the surface as flat terminations with a bright, waxy lustre, but on the side of the specimen, in cross-section, it is clear that no prisms are involved, just colour-zoned pink layered banding like in a stalactite. Underneath this a tiny bed of microscopic Quartz crystals can be seen. Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines is now so difficult to obtain, and this habit is very different to the norm. Small, but strikingly beautiful.
