Rhodochrosite
The N'Chwaning mines in the Kalahari Manganese Field, North Cape Province, South Africa are some of the most famous for spectacular crystallized Rhodochrosite specimens which are known to occur in a number of different forms, both shape and colour. This fine small miniature specimen consists of a domed, flower-like aggregate (2.7 cm across) of rich pearlescent pink platy rhombic Rhodochrosite crystals growing outwards from a central core of black manganese oxide, as show by a cross-section on the underside of the specimen. The Rhodochrosite crystals form a colourful outer 3 to 4 mm crystallized layer upon a pale pink inner zone. Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines is now so difficult to obtain, and this attractive habit is slightly different to the norm.
