Tucson, Arizona, USAThe N'Chwaning mines in the Kalahari Manganese Field, North Cape Province, South Africa are some of the most famous for spectacular crystallized Rhodochrosite specimens which are known to occur in a number of different forms, both shape and colour. This fine small miniature specimen consists of a domed, flower-like aggregate (2.7 cm across) of rich pearlescent pink platy rhombic Rhodochrosite crystals growing outwards from a central core of black manganese oxide, as show by a cross-section on the underside of the specimen. The Rhodochrosite crystals form a colourful outer 3 to 4 mm crystallized layer upon a pale pink inner zone. Rhodochrosite from the N'Chwaning mines is now so difficult to obtain, and this attractive habit is slightly different to the norm.
