Small, but magnificent is how I would describe this miniature Rose Quartz specimen from Ilha claim nearTaquaral in the famous gem-producing Jequitinhonha Valley in Minas Gerais, Brazil. We all know of the beautiful pale pink variety of Quartz known as Rose Quartz as seen as polished tumbled stones in high street crystal shops but how many also stock real crystals of Rose Quartz? - virtually none, because of their rarity. In fact, Rose Quartz is probably the hardest variety of Quartz, to find in crystals. Ilha claim is one of the few sources of Rose Quartz crystals in the world, but even then crystals are usually very small and coalesced together in distorted aggregates and often quite pale in colour. This wonderful specimen is an exception and a fine one at that. Focussed upon an individual terminated pale Smoky Quartz crystal, finely crystallized Rose Quartz is draped around three sides like a cape. The pink colour is some of the most intense I have witnessed in Rose Quartz and the crystals sharp and spiky. It might be miniature in size, but is a remarkable Rose Quartz from the world's premier locality.
