The Madoc area, or Madoc Township in Hastings County, Ontario is one of the most famous Fluorite-producing areas in Canada. This pure, cabinet-sized specimen of crystallized soft greenish coloured Fluorite, is the classic colour known from this area and is a quite large crystallized example of this sort. Several mines once operated in the vicinity of Madoc, but older Fluorite specimens are rarely attributed to an individual site. Bailey mine was the first Fluorite-producing mine to open in the area, in 1905, with operations in 1907, 1916-1917 and 1944-1950, and producing about 20,000 tons of Fluorite, but Rogers mine was more productive and is where many of the best crystallized specimens were collected during the mid to late 1970s. Rogers mine appears to be the most likely source, although we cannot prove it. At over 4.5 cm on edge, the largest crystal on this specimen is impressive in size, but does show signs of wear, both as contact damage and cleavage surfaces. It is a cube, but with octahedral modifications to its corners and with stepped crystallized surfaces to its main faces. Optically, it has good transparency. Ex Arvid Pasto collection.
