Fluorite
This pretty purple Elmwood mine Fluorite crystal is more complex than initially meets the eye. The front is a pale purple cubic crystal but something different is apparent by the way the light passes through from behind. Turn the crystal around and all is revealed - with natural etching of the internal fabric of the crystal. This sort of etching is sometimes seen at Elmwood mine with the cone-shaped Fluorite crystals, but other forms of etching occur, such as this one, where the outer layer of the crystal is preserved along with a central core, but with the 'middle' areas dissolved. The Fluorite cube faces are somewhat matt in appearance, but in good overall condition. On the reverse the etched Fluorite is actually much more glassy in appearance with the core being much paler in colour than the thin outer 'skin' of purple Fluorite. A fine Elmwood mine miniature, full of character. Ex Arvid Pasto collection.
