Milpillas is the undisputed modern era world king of azurite - for quantity and variety. This specimen is so geometric, it is hard to believe at first. It is composed of conjoined, robust, sharp crystals sticking out all around, to an inch or so. What you first see is intense saturated blue color, accented with spots of green at the edges. However, on close inspection, you can see this is the "electric blue" azurite which sparkles and shows metallic flecks of light when lit just right, to bounce light into the top shallow layer of azurite, because that tiny thin sub-millimeter of azurite reflects the light and gives that effect as light hits the green layer below and bounces out again. It sits on a velvety green, vibrant malachite pseudomorph after azurite (from a previous generation). It is thought that this combination of micro-wafer-thin azurite atop the intense green malachite is responsible for these having this bright and open color, rather than being too dark as with so many azurites. The layer is so thin, that many specimens, as with this, have small gaps where you can see the malachite underneath; and these little gaps may look like damage or rubs, but are probably simply growth defects which in any case reveal the true and complex story here. Please note that this effect is more obvious - and inspiring - in person! So, the specimen is more properly azurite atop malachite pseudomorph after azurite.
