Out of all the different types of garnet in the world, Grossular var. Hessonite from Jeffrey mine in Canada is one of the most popular, if not the most sought after. The quality of the Grossular var. Hessonite crystals found over the period from the 1970s to late 1990s are simply unsurpassed for that species. It is not just their extreme glassy gemminess and rich orange-pink colour, but their crystal form. The crystals there display a rhombic-dodecahedral form but what sets them apart, and elevates them to another level, is their famous 'stepped' faces. This cabinet-sized display specimen comprises a flat plate of host rock - possibly rodingite - with one side dappled white and black from the underlying rock, but with about 35% of the surface covered with bright, gemmy, lustrous orange Hessonite crystals, the largest crystal reaching 9 mm across. The light reflects wonderfully off these crystals, picking out the stepped growth surfaces amazingly well. If you look carefully you will see that there is contact damage to several of the Hessonite crystals but they still reflect brightly and look extremely fine. As a larger display Hessonite than many which we see from Jeffrey mine, this specimen does stand out and has great aesthetics in the way the garnet crystals are dispersed across the white and black backdrop. The back of the specimen has small patches of poorly crystallized Hessonite along with broader areas of sugary white and cream microcrystals of two unidentified minerals - possibly Albite and Natrolite. A really fine Hessonite from this remarkable occurrence.
