The intensity of colour in this beautiful raspberry-red Elbaite tourmaline crystal from Coronel Murta in Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais state, Brazil is exceptional. Like a pencil in thickness, this 4.2 cm long prismatic crystal has an extremely vibrant colour, and although much of the crystal is inclusion-rich, light transmits through it extremely well, to produce an exceptional brightness. The crystal displays an excellent flat, pinacoid termination, but for 1.7 cm of its lower part, one side of the prism is missing. There is a horizontal fracture across the crystal where it reaches its complete width, but we do not believe this to be a repair. The rich raspberry-red/pink colour extends along the entire length of the crystal, but does vary in intensity. Near to the termination the colour eases off slightly for about 4 mm and then kicks back in with an extremely intense deep raspberry-red band, 1 mm wide, right at the tip of the crystal. This is a really beautifully coloured Elbaite, the top colour for which Coronel Murta is renowned, and supremely glassy too.
