Tucson, Arizona, USAIt is not difficult to see why Jeffrey mine is such a well-known locality when it comes to garnet. The quality of the Grossular var. Hessonite garnet crystals found over the period from the 1970s to late 1990s are simply unsurpassed. It is not just their extreme glassy gemminess and rich orange-pink colour, but their crystal form. This small cabinet-sized display specimen is a really fine example featuring an entire display surface covered in sharp, sparking glassy crystals, the largest reaching 8 mm across, but most between 3 to 4 mm in size. These crystals look amazing, but there are slight chips in the edges of a few crystals. The crystals in general display a perfect rhombic-dodecahedral form without the famous 'stepped' faces seen in some Jeffrey mine crystals. Nevertheless, for an eye-catching Hessonite variety of Grossular, you can't go far wrong. The back of the specimen reveals radiating acicular sprays of Diopside and the main body of the specimen displays nicely the host rock - possibly rodingite.
