Fluorite
This is a wonderful Illinois fluorite for a number of reasons. The first simply being the color, which is one of the most important attributes of a fluorite specimen. The saturation of the blue and purple zonation’s in this specimen are bright and vivid as would be expected in a quality specimen. Secondly the specimen is of good size with the primary cube measuring over 7.5cm on edge. Lastly the specimen features a nice accent of dogtooth calcites which are distributed across the specimen adding contrast in both color and geometric form to the specimen. Finding a Illinois fluorite of this caliber has become quite difficult since with most of the productive fluorite mines in the district have been closed for a number of decades. Please note that the specimen in this photo has backlighting as would be common in any quality mineral display case.
