Many dozens of purple, translucent, pseudohexagonal crystals of Chromian Amesite blanket the display surface of this colorful small cabinet piece. The Amesite crystals are well-formed, elongate, pseudohexagonal prisms that range in size from 2 to 6 mm and are in vertical to near-vertical growth with the flat tops of the crystals easily reflecting incident light. The Saranovskii Mine in Russia is a Chromite mine better known for its rich specimens of bright green Uvarovite garnet which actually form an underlying druse upon which the Chromian Amesite crystallized. This mine produces the best-of-species for Amesite due to its gorgeous lilac color and great crystals! But these are elongated and particularly interesting....although I used to see them in the late 1990s coming out via the Fersman Museum and others from Russia, I have seen very little of this material in the last 20 years.
