Quartz var. Amethyst
1
Amethyst, the purple variety of Quartz, is one of those minerals which looks amazing but gets overlooked due to its presence in almost every crystal shop on Earth. However, most of those specimens have come from one or two deposits in South American countries and not from Australia. In Australia Amethyst is rare. So much so, that this small deposit at Wyloo Station in Western Australia has been named "The Great Australian Amethyst mine". This mine has produced some exceptionally large individual crystals, but most of these are damaged, or lack an intensity in colour. That is certainly not something that can be said about this beauty. Here, two very large, somewhat squat terminated pyramidal crystals sit upright for display in what is a large cabinet piece. The crystals reach at least 10 cm in height with a width of nearly 13 cm and present a fabulous rich purple glassy pyramidal top with clear zonation to a pale purple short prism below. This is undoubtedly a magnificent Australian Amethyst, perfect for a dramatic colourful display.
