The remote Yinnietharra area in Upper Gascoyne Shire, Western Australia is regarded as having produced some the world's best Dravite crystals. The large, perfectly formed crystals, were usually removed from matrix, like this one, but finding specimens with character is much harder. This fantastic cabinet-sized display specimen is certainly something very different, featuring not one, but three large, extremely well-formed Dravite crystals meaning that is can be displayed from several angles. It is open to debate whether the crystals are twinned, or triplets, or simply intergrown, but they form a floater, complete all round, the only evidence of attachment being small inclusions of host rock within the individual crystals, which has impacted the full termination on one of the crystals. The crystals are terminated with the classic trigonal pyramid, but the pyramid faces are not quite rhombic due to the slight development of ditrigonal prism faces. An interesting specimen from a crystallographic perspective. The individual crystals measure up to 8 cm in length by 7 cm wide and are very dark brown in colour. Despite the minor 'damage' where the crystals are included with host rock this is a significant crystallized Dravite tourmaline.
